Expert Block Paving That Lasts

Block paving is a driveway and hard-standing surface built from individual concrete or clay blocks, laid by hand in a pattern over a compacted, properly engineered sub-base. Because the surface is made of separate units bedded on sand, it flexes gently with ground movement and traffic instead of cracking like a solid slab.

That gives you a strong, hard-wearing driveway with an exceptional choice of colours, patterns and borders. It also means any single block can be lifted and dropped back years later if it is ever stained or damaged, without leaving a patch. Laid on the right foundation, it is one of the longest-lasting driveway surfaces available, and getting that foundation right is where the expertise counts.

The Block Paving We Lay

Block paving ranges from a hard-wearing family driveway to a decorative courtyard. These are the finishes we are trusted with most:

Herringbone driveways

The strongest laying pattern, with interlocking blocks that spread the load of cars and vans. It is the go-to for any driveway that takes real weight.

Stretcher and basketweave patterns

Cleaner, more traditional looks for patios, paths and courtyards where the traffic is lighter and the finish is the priority.

Concrete and clay block paving

Hard-wearing concrete blocks in almost any colour and shape, or natural clay pavers that hold their colour for decades.

Contrasting borders and kerbs

Granite kerbs, brick edging and colour-contrast borders that frame a drive and hold the edges tight. A recent example is a tarmac driveway finished with a crisp grey block paving border, a combination we are regularly asked for.

Permeable block paving

Laid with a gapped joint and an open sub-base so surface water drains straight through, which helps meet drainage and SuDS requirements on newer driveways.

I can't recommend Paddway Surfacing Solutions enough. Jamie was so easy to deal with, from the first consultation and listened to what we wanted. We had a tarmac driveway laid with a grey block paving border. The price was so reasonable and the job was well executed. Really pleased with the work.

Why a Block Paving Driveway Pays Off

A driveway that lasts decadesLaid on a properly engineered sub-base, a block paving driveway holds true for 20 years or more, so you surface once and forget about it.

Repairs without a scarIf a block is ever stained or damaged, it lifts out and a fresh one drops in. No visible patch, no colour mismatch, no resurfacing the whole drive.

Kerb appeal that adds valueA crisp, well-laid drive is one of the first things visitors and buyers notice, and block paving offers the widest choice of finish of any driveway surface.

Built to take the weightInterlocking blocks spread the load of cars, vans and deliveries, so the surface holds its shape rather than rutting or sinking in the wheel tracks.

How a Block Paving Job Works

01

Free site survey and quote

Jamie visits, measures up, checks the levels and drainage, and gives you a clear written quote with no obligation.

02

Excavation and sub-base

We dig out to the correct depth, then lay and compact a stone sub-base. This is the layer that decides how long the drive lasts.

03

Edgings and falls

Kerbs and edge restraints are haunched in on concrete, and the levels are set so water runs away from your house, not toward it.

04

Laying and compacting

Blocks are laid to your chosen pattern, cut in neatly at the edges, then vibrated down and locked in place with kiln-dried jointing sand.

05

Clean up and sign off

The site is swept and cleared, and we walk the finished drive with you before we leave. Every driveway is backed by our 3-year workmanship guarantee.

Why choose us

Why Choose Paddway for Block Paving

The finish you see is only ever as strong as the base you do not. A properly engineered, compacted sub-base is what carries the load and keeps a drive true for decades, so that is where our groundworks expertise goes first. Get it right and a block paving driveway holds its line for 20 years or more.

Paddway lays roads, car parks, drainage and ironwork under a street works ticket, so the excavation, falls and edge restraints beneath your drive are built to the standard a road demands, a depth of capability few driveway contractors in the county can offer. About the Owner, Jamie Robinson

Block paving at Paddway is laid by Jamie Robinson, the owner. Jamie started in surfacing at 20 and has 17 years in the trade, laying driveways, car parks and roads across Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire. He quotes and works the jobs himself, so the person who prices your drive is the specialist who lays it.

“A block paving drive is only ever as good as what sits underneath it. Get the sub-base and the falls right and it will still look sharp in twenty years. That is the part nobody sees once the job is done, and it is the part I never cut.”Jamie Robinson, owner

Block Paving Across the Region

We lay block paving driveways from our Retford base across Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire, including Worksop, Newark, Doncaster, Lincoln, Grantham, Sleaford and Stamford.

How Our Block Paving Quotes Work

Every driveway is priced after a proper look, because no two are the same. What shapes a block paving quote is the size of the area, the block and pattern you choose, how much excavation and muck-away the ground needs, whether drainage or a soakaway is required, and the type of edging and border.

What you can always count on: a free site survey, a clear written quote with no obligation, and an honest, expert assessment of the right build-up for your ground, so you know exactly what is included before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a block paving driveway last?+
Laid on a properly engineered, compacted sub-base, a block paving driveway holds true for 20 years or more. The sub-base underneath is what really determines its life, which is why the groundwork comes first. Keep the joints topped up with kiln-dried sand and give it the occasional wash down, and a well-laid drive stays sound for decades.
Is it cheaper to lay block paving or tarmac?+
It depends on the size of the area, the ground and the blocks you choose, so it varies from job to job. Tarmac is usually quicker over a large area, while block paving gives you far more choice of colour and pattern. Jamie talks you through both at the free survey.
What is the going rate for block paving?+
There is no single rate, because the price depends on the area, the amount of excavation and drainage, and the blocks and borders you choose. Rather than guess a figure down the phone, Jamie gives you a free site survey and a clear written quote for your driveway.
Do block paving driveways need sealing?+
Sealing is optional, not essential. A sealant can help protect the colour and make the surface easier to keep clean, but a well-laid block paving driveway performs perfectly well unsealed. Jamie will advise what suits the blocks you choose, and if you do want to seal, it is best done once the drive has weathered for a few months.
Can you use 50mm (2-inch) pavers for a driveway?+
Yes. 50mm block pavers are the standard thickness for domestic driveways and comfortably take the weight of cars and vans. Heavier commercial areas may call for 60mm or 80mm blocks, which we confirm at the survey. What matters just as much as the block thickness is the sub-base beneath it, and that is where a driveway is really made to last.
How long does it take to install a block paving driveway?+
Most domestic driveways take from a few days to around a week, depending on the size, the amount of excavation and drainage, and the weather. We give you a realistic timescale with your written quote, and once the blocks are laid and jointed the drive is ready to take your cars straight away.
Can you lay a tarmac driveway with a block paving border?+
Yes, and it is one of our most popular finishes: a tarmac driveway framed with a contrasting block paving border. It gives you the value of tarmac with the crisp edge and kerb appeal of block paving. The block border also holds the tarmac edge tight, which is exactly where a plain tarmac drive tends to crumble first.
